How Hearing Aids Work

Did you know that hearing aids have actually been around for years and years? In fact, the first hearing aids were really just conical devices which you had to hold up to your ear in order for someone to be able to speak to you - this hearing device would in turn funnel the sound so it traveled directly into your ear. These days, there are several different types of hearing aids that are very impressive that work with even better technology. So let's take a look at how hearing aids work in today's world.

In order to make soft sounds louder, the hearing aids on the market today use small microphones. They are able to do this with a really tiny microphone. The microphone receives the sound and then converts it into an electrical signal or a digital signal that will send data to a speaker which turns it into sound once again. The settings that these microphones have are able to take into account the actual degree of hearing loss that the individual has as well as the environment that they are normally in. When you see the term environment, it pertains to the noise that is normally around you and how much of it is normal.

Is it possible that you are normally around high frequency noises? If you are around high frequency noises, do you need or want to hear them? Or, do you function in an environment that is quiet? Every single one of these questions is important when the audiologist is adjusting your settings on your device. Basically, this is really only part of the explanation on how hearing aids work. These days, there are really only three basic kinds of technology that are able to receive and convert the sound signals that are captured inside of hearing aids. The analog hearing aid is the least advanced and it also costs less than other types of hearing aids. The audiologist can adjust this hearing aid to control the volume as well as other specifications. The factory can also make the hearing aids custom for you as well so that you can adjust the volume or so that the volume can be controlled automatically.

There is also another type of circuitry that is also found in hearing aids which is referred to as analog programmable. You will find that these hearing aids are somewhat better than hearing aids that are analog adjustable because they are actually programmed by a computer. With these hearing aids, the audiologist is able to set different programs for sound capture and sound transmission to adjust to different situations of listening. The user of the hearing aid can also select the program to use with a remote control at any given time.

The hearing aids that are digital programmable are the most advanced; they are also the most expensive as well. In the past, they were actually impossible and impractical because they were not made small enough, however that is no longer true. They incorporate a chip that processes the sound and then amplifies it according to the need. These usually work in an automatic manner so there is little need for any adjustment.

Hearing well today is so much easier thanks to the strides that have been made in this field.
