Avoid Eating And Drinking Acid Reflux Causing Foods

We eat when we're hungry but in spite of that, malnourishment could result from the intake of food lacking vitamins and minerals. Not all food is healthy and most popular foodstuff can be classified as having no food value and rightly are called junk food. Unfortunately, because of convenience and taste, junk food still finds many takers.

People with illnesses are advised to avoid certain foods and to take certain foods. The same is the case when one suffers from acid reflux. Acid reflux is a condition where the acids in the stomach get back into the esophagus and throat due a malfunctioning valve, called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter. If this condition is not treated in time, serious complications can arise.

Bad breath, sour taste, burning sensation in the esophagus and the back of the throat, excessive belching, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in swallowing food and a feeling of tightness in the throat, are all symptoms of acid reflux. If you experience any or some of these symptoms, consult your doctor to get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

It has been noticed that certain beverages and foods cause acid reflux and these are:

Coffee
Fatty foods
Fried foods
Caffeinated drinks
Citrus fruits
Spicy foods
Tomato-based products
Alcoholic drinks
Fruit juices
Chocolate
Spearmint and peppermint
Onions

It might seem a bit tough at first to follow a strict food regime but it is best that you change your diet and food habits as the most effective way to deal with acid reflux. The alternative is to face far more serious problems later.

Begin the process by maintaining a record of your entire food intake. This list will give you an indication of the items that you consume that can be the cause for your acid reflux. By identifying the item that causes you discomfort, every time you have a bout of acid reflux, you have taken the first step in eliminating it from your diet.

Changing a lifetime of habits can be a daunting task. By taking the help of your doctor, this can however be achieved. Set yourself goals like eating smaller meals and avoiding some which cause acid reflux like stopping smoking and drinking alcohol. Take your time but accomplish the change that you want.

Whenever the symptoms arise, you know that you are on the wrong path. That will remind you to exercise self-discipline.

You can of course take antacids to treat the symptoms. It is however, better that you go the natural route, which in the long term will benefit you more than any medication will. Continued intake of antacids is not good for your system.

A healthy lifestyle not only prevents acid reflux, it prevents other diseases as well. More will be gained by a healthy lifestyle, particularly the food aspects of it. Eating the right quantity, quality and type of food will keep you healthy and without acid reflux.
